- Kirkegaard rejected the "omni-god" hypothesis which is so classic to Christianity (and in so doing reduced god to meaninglessness instead of confining it to contradiction, which was his intention), and then attempted to redirect the agnostics argument about the inability of human knowledge to comprehend what god is into a proof that he exists. It took some squirming. - Essentially, he declares all pre-existing god concepts invalid, and gives no offering in return for how human beings are to conceptualize of god... other than mouth the word. So he reduces god to an empty concept, a floating abstraction in the minds of human beings. This is a direct appeal to some other medium of cognition other than human faculties, although he doesn't elaborate on what it is or how it functions. It happens "somehow" and we're able to relate to god "somehow" but not with our minds. (This is classic Christian anti-intellectualism, hatred of the mind, that goes all the way back to the first book of Genesis... which declared that the evil fruit was that of the Tree of Knowledge. This is one of the biggest reason that even "moderate" versions of Christianity are Poison.) - He attempted to point out a distinction between faith and belief, by saying that belief requires understanding... (and as an aside if you believe similarly, then Atheists do not hold positive beliefs about the non-existence of god because it would be a prerequisite that they have some understanding of god, which none have) and his version of faith ought not require any understanding because that would be filtering beliefs in god through your mind in an attempt to understand why you believe what you believe. This filtration process he wanted you to bypass and simply have faith, but don't believe. Put bluntly, he epitomizes the original Nike slogan of "Just Do It." This of course, isn't an argument, which is why its in Nike commercials. - Then, to illustrate he attempted to compare his definition of faith with trust. Just commit yourself to trusting in god... although according to his own logic god is a vacuous concept... So you must completely trust in and have complete faith in this thing which you are forbidden to understand. - His conclusions were often bizarre... for example he declared boldly that Christianity makes absolutely no sense, and this fact is what makes it "better" than other religions. As an Atheist that analyzes arguments for Christianity all the time, I can't see how his very weak approach appeals to you. For me, I feel like... if there is a god... and he created us with the capacities for reason/logic etc... these ought to be considered gifts... not roadblocks. The human mind and your ability to think on the level you do using it is not something to throw away because some outdated theology says "just do it" Might wanna rethink this one bro. I just plain don't care. I won't abdicate finding meaning to any organization, book, or holy figure. What I do know about the Bible (as I don't have the patience to read another holy book) is that it is useful as just an old piece of literature. Just this Sunday night I related something of the Book of Job to one of the regulars at my bar who will be divorced today. I think by now it's already official, but she's gathered some of her friends around her to just hang out, and I don't remember the specifics, but I believe there was a similar portion in the Book of Job after Job's had completely been cast into ruin. edit: Also RICHARD Edited by Ninjerk, Jun 23 2009, 03:18 PM.
